The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Delaware invites applications from candidates to pursue PhD studies in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics. Successful applicants are offered a competitive package, including:
– an annual stipend of $30,000 for 9 month, with an anticipated increase in later years;
– summer research opportunities carrying a supplement of $6,000;
– winter and summer teaching opportunities with additional remuneration;
– instructor of record opportunities for the best qualified students;
– a route to simultaneously obtain an MS degree in Data Science at no additional cost.
The Department’s research includes some of the most recent trends, covering a variety of areas, including analysis, computational mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematics of data science, numerical analysis and PDE’s, probability theory and its applications, and quantum information science.
Incoming students are offered mentorships by faculty and peers through well-established mentoring schemes. Active graduate student chapters of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics and the Association of Women in Mathematics provide great opportunities for socializing and networking with peers within and outside the university.
The deadline for applications for a September 2025 start with full funding is January 15, 2025. The application requires the inclusion of an up-to-date CV, a personal statement, academic transcripts, three reference letters and, for international applicants, a valid TOEFL score of at least 600 points (or equivalent). GRE scores are optional.
